* Better Branches CUSO Launches New Basic Contact Management Solution
* CoreTrac Signs Tyndall FCU
* Carswell Data Products Inks Deals with 6 CUs
* Aptys Solutions Launches Active Archive

Better Branches, a San Francisco-based CUSO, announced the release of a Basic Contact Management solution for credit unions built on their Better WorkGroups platform. Its goal is to enable staff to deliver superior service with each service touch, elevating service standards to a level that builds trust, increases sales, and encourages referrals. The solution is designed to improve staff collaboration by filing records of past service events by member name and date in a centralized location, providing an enterprise-wide view of member contact history.

Tyndall Federal Credit Union announced it has contracted with Austin, TX-based CoreTrac to install the company’s ResourceOne CRM/Sales Force Automation solution. The ResourceOne platform features lead and referral contact/account management; loan and deposit pipeline management; detailed management reports; incentive and compensation tracking; and Outlook integration.

Michigan-based Carswell Data Products announced that their e-Sig Plus paperless document management software suite has been chosen by six credit unions. The six are: Georgetown Kraft FCU, Georgetown, SC; Golden Eagle FCU, Tulsa, OK; HOYA FCU, Washington, DC; Jackson City County FCU, Jackson, MS; Pasadena FCU, Pasadena, CA, and Pickens FCU, Pickens, SC

Aptys Solutions, a payments network provider for credit unions nationwide, has launched its Active Archive solution which enables credit unions to manage all payments information in a single location. By merging all payments data, the flexible solution enables credit unions to pull both correspondent and respondent payment analytics.

Hardware News

Digital Check announced the launch of the TellerScan TS240/TTP (teller transaction printer), a combination unit that incorporates check scanning and thermal transaction printing into one device. The device combines Digital Check's TS240 batch-fed scanner, which scans at 50, 75 or 100 documents per minute, with CognitiveTPG's A799 thermal printer. The company says that the benefit of the TS240/TTP is that it saves up to 50% of valuable teller counter space by combining scanner and receipt printer units, each of which previously required its own space, into one footprint about equivalent to the scanner. The thermal printer can print check images from the member's deposit, as well as variable targeted marketing messages.

Software Updates

VMware has cut in half the price of a virtualization software package geared toward small and midsize organizations, and changed the way it prices management products to let customers avoid unnecessary charges. VSphere Essentials, an entry-level virtualization platform, will now cost $495 for six CPUs, or $83 per processor, down from $995 for six CPUs. VMware is also changing the pricing model of its management products to charge once for every virtual machine, rather than once for every processor.

The Fair Isaac Corporation has updated their FICO Debt Manager to version 8. The company says that the new package interface makes the product easier to learn and use than its predecessors, and the new system eliminates the need for overnight batch processing, which will help collectors avoid down-time or calling on members whose payments have posted that day. FICO Debt Manager 8.0 is built entirely on a services-oriented architecture (SOA) that allows for faster and easier upgrades.

ATMs/Kiosks

Shimming is one of the highest tech ATM cons that scam artists are deploying. Shimming works by compromising a legitimate card reader by inserting a very thin flexible circuit board through the card slot that will stick to the internal contacts that read card data. The shim is inserted using a "carrier card" that holds the shim, inserted into the card slot and locked into place on the internal reader contacts. The carrier card is then removed. Once inserted, the shim is not visible from the outside of the machine. The shim performs a man-in-the-middle attack between an inserted credit card and the circuit board of the ATM. It has been reported that effective flexible shims are being mass produced and widely used in certain parts of Europe.

PULSE, one of the nation’s largest electronic funds transfer networks, has begun offering credit unions the ability to process PIN debit purchases over the Internet, following a successful 10-month pilot. PULSE's Internet PIN Debit uses Acculynk’s PaySecure Internet PIN debit software. Credit unions have until Oct. 25 to decide whether they will incorporate PULSE Internet PIN Debit into their payment-acceptance schemes - after that date they will be automatically included. However, some issuers will not be able to partake because the PIN offset data, which verifies the PIN, is located on the magnetic stripe of the cards they issue, not on a computer as part of a hosted solution.

Trusted Security Solutions announced that it has added EPP serial number validation and tracking now required by the latest network and security mandates for the A98-R remote-key management system. The A98-R implements different ATM manufacturers' remote key protocols involving the exchange of signed public keys or certificates. The protocols themselves do not call for EPP serial number validation, but EPP validation has become the focus of many security standards when remote key loading is in place.

Wireless World

According to a new forecast by Juniper Research, the value of physical and digital goods that people buy with their mobiles could reach $200 billion globally by 2012, compared to just less than $100 billion this year. The new study on Mobile Payments for Digital and Physical Goods found that the availability of secure, easy-to-use, payment applications and the growing realization among users that they can make e-commerce purchases by mobile will drive the market for both digital commodities such as entertainment and tickets and physical goods including groceries, clothes, gifts and books. The report notes that “our research showed that the purchase experience has been enhanced by improved mobile commerce transaction processes due to faster mobile networks, more powerful devices and much more user friendly Smartphone apps.”

A major research firm has released a survey of consumer mobile banking preferences that shows that mobile banking usage has almost doubled since last year's survey, and the number of institutions offering the service has also increased. However, they are quick to point out that it is not yet a mainstream channel and in order to be successful, credit unions need to be strategic about their mobile offerings. We will cover their recommendations in the August issue of Credit Union tech-talk - subscribe now.

NetSecure Technologies recently announced the availability of their personal credit card reader, SmartSwipe, for credit unions to help protect members’ private information while they shop online. SmartSwipe encrypts the card information while being swiped, rendering it unreadable to malicious programs. The company says that their dynamic SSL technology secures sensitive data at the point of origin, thereby protecting sensitive financial and personal information from endpoint threats such as Keylogging, Spyware and Man-in-the-Browser.

According to a survey by Detica NetReveal and Ipsos MORI, many Americans want more insight on fraud prevention. The survey found that 65 percent of respondents desire more insight into the preventative measures their financial institutions have implemented, with 48 percent indicating they were fairly or very concerned that their accounts could be at risk of fraud. Of those surveyed, 61 percent believe it is chiefly their FI's responsibility to protect their accounts from fraud.

Regardless of numerous layers of defense, malware threats can still sneak through. Some IT professionals advocate simply wiping systems and reinstalling Windows, while others use various techniques to clean machines. We will show some of these methods in the August issue of Credit Union tech-talk - subscribe today.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

Synergistics is reporting that online bill payment has grown to become the No. 1 method of bill payment for Internet-connected households. As many as 73 percent of Internet-connected households are paying bills online in 2010, up from 53 percent in 2004. Further, households with Internet are paying the largest portion of their bills online compared to other methods such as checks, with 41 percent of bills paid online versus 28 percent paid through check. "Online bill payment is clearly extensive among Internet households and is in fact the primary method of bill payment," said William H. McCracken, CEO of Synergistics. "It can no longer be considered an 'extra' or 'value-added' service by financial institutions, but simply one that must be offered as a matter of competitive parity. The focus of financial institutions should be to continue to grow the proportion of bills paid online, as well as to drive as much of this activity as possible to their own sites, rather than billers, as a relationship strengthening tactic."

The total value of the branded prepaid card opportunity in the United States is expected to surpass $440 billion by 2017, nearly quadrupling its estimated value of $120.2 billion in 2009, according to independent research commissioned by MasterCard. The Prepaid Market Sizing Report, prepared by The Boston Consulting Group, indicates that future branded prepaid growth will be driven primarily by increases in the public sector and corporate payroll segments.

Internet Access

Verizon recently announced VoIP IP Enterprise Routing or VIPER, which may cause a bit of confusion with Cisco's VIPR protocol. Some analysts have suggested that Verizon rename the service to Pure SIP Routing (PSR) because Verizon is simply routing enterprise VoIP calls in an all-IP fashion without touching the PSTN. VIPER is being offered to oeganizations as an opt-in cost-saving feature where business-to-business VOIP calls on the Verizon Business network are directly routed via SIP, eliminating domestic and international per-minute calling charges. If your credit union already has a Verizon Business VoIP service such as IP trunking and hosted IP Centrex, the VIPER feature is available at no charge and does not require any additional customer hardware or software.

TDM (time-division multiplexing) trunks have long served to connect corporate PBXs to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). But with more companies moving to VoIP, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking has become an increasingly popular technology companies can use to simplify their network architecture and save money. We will cover the basics of SIP in the August issue of Credit Union tech-talk - subscribe now.

Call Centers

Measuring the effectiveness of your call center training can be difficult. Some centers use the following methods:

• A feedback form at the end of every training session administered to your agents.
• A quiz at the end of every training program - the scores of your agents will indicate to you the success of the training program.
• Another indicator of good training is the Quality Monitoring scores.

You can also visit the American Society for Training and Development website: www.astd.com and click on the resources area. Plus, they have links to many training resources, as well as a catalog of tools.
