Tampa, FL–based GTE Federal Credit Union, with
almost a quarter million members and more than $2
billion in assets, has selected Open Solutions’
The Complete Credit Union Solution as well as
several complementary products to address its core
processing and other technology needs. In addition
to The Complete Credit Union Solution data
processing platform, GTE also selected Open
Solutions’ cView (CRM/business intelligence),
e-Commerce Banker (Internet banking), financial
accounting, ProfitVision (profitability),
collections, Open Solutions' Channel Management
Center suite (an interface between disparate
systems), the voice response and imaging
applications.
Harland Financial Solutions, Inc., a wholly owned
subsidiary of John H. Harland Company, has
selected Digital Insight's Member Business
Services as its preferred online cash management
solution for resale to its 400 credit union
clients that use its ULTRADATA core processing
system. The cash management solution that helps
business members manage their accounts, understand
their cash positions, make payments to vendors,
process payroll and take advantage of automatic
account alerts and sweeps.
CUSC, the largest shared branching acquirer
network which provides service center locations
with the ability to conduct financial transactions
for members from credit unions worldwide, recently
finalized an agreement to be an official
distributor of EPL's CUe-Passport teller
application. EPL, Inc., a credit union-owned,
leading provider of business and technology
solutions, is helping CUSC deploy CUe-Passport as
the sole shared branching teller application for
CUSC stand-alone and outlet locations without a
shared branching acquirer solution.
SecureWorks, a Managed Security Service company
that protects credit union networks, servers, and
email environments, announced that it ranked 39th
on the 2005 Deloitte Technology Fast 500, a
ranking of the 500 fastest growing technology
companies in North America. Rankings are based on
percentage revenue growth over five years, from
2000-2004. SecureWorks' revenue grew 6,710 percent
during this period.
Digital Resolve, a leading provider of
transparent, multi-layered risk-based
authentication solutions, has introduced the Smart
Cookie, which adds a new layer of protection to
its Fraud Analyst product for online fraud and
identity theft prevention for the financial
services industry. Digital Resolve says that their
new Smart Cookie, which utilizes Fraud Analyst’s
behavioral analysis engine, cannot be passed along
by fraudsters to a credit union in an attempt to
impersonate a legitimate member.

Hewlett-Packard
is launching a line of new laser copier/printers,
branded toner and services targeted at small
businesses. Currently in fourth place in the
multifunction printer market behind Canon, Xerox
and Ricoh, HP is hoping make up ground with their
new program dubbed Smart Printing Services.
Starting Nov. 1, HP will coach companies on what
printer services they need and then allow them to
lease printers and related supplies and service
through a contract for a flat monthly payment.
Their Color LaserJet 4730mfp can print, copy, scan
to e-mail, scan to folder, and send an analog fax.
The product can print in monochrome and color at
up to 30 pages per minute. Prices for the machine
start at $4,999. Four other color laser jet
printers - HP's 3000, 3600, 3800 and 4700 - can
either be hooked up to a network or stand alone.
Prices range from $799 for a non-networked version
of the HP 3800 all the way to $41,799 for a
networked HP 4700 printer.
Quantum just announced a 320GB (with compression)
storage format based on Digital Linear Tape (DLT)
for under a $1,000. That is enough that most small
credit unions would be able to back up their 200GB
drive with ease. The drive is available in both
Ultra 160 SCSI and Serial ATA which makes it well
suited for use in lower-end servers.
A company called Network Streaming has come out
with an appliance that lets help desk staff take
control of remote computers without the
time-consuming tasks of installing and maintaining
dedicated software on the remote machines. The NS
Support Appliance can sit outside corporate
firewalls or between firewalls in a secure network
segment. Because it uses HTTP Ports 80 and 443,
which are generally left open, it requires no
firewall reconfiguration. Since no software is
installed at the client, an authorized user must
be sitting at the machine to initiate sessions;
although the company does sell an application
called AccessDesk that enables taking remote
control of unmanned machines.

Updates
Experian has rolled out a Portfolio Benchmarking
and Trend Analysis application. This new tool,
built on Experian's File One consumer credit
database, tracks changes in credit activity so
financial services companies can assess current
conditions, analyze trends and benchmark against
competitors to make strategic portfolio decisions.
The company says that a marketing person, for
example, could use Portfolio Benchmarking and
Trend Analysis to profile consumers in a specific
metropolitan statistical area, state or region
based on delinquency, loan amount, utilization and
inquiry behaviors; while risk managers could look
at 30, 60 and 90-day delinquency trends in
specific footprint markets.
ThinkFree Office suite is a low cost ($50)
alternative to Microsoft Office. Their big selling
point is that they use the same file formats as
Microsoft Office and that their lack of a
proprietary file format makes it easier to
integrate ThinkFree into an existing network
application architecture. ThinkFree Write supports
the following file formats: Microsoft Word and RTF
(Rich Text File), Adobe's SVG (Scalar Vector
Graphics), plain text and Adobe's PDF (Portable
Document Format). Calc supports Microsoft Excel
formats as well as XML, HTML, Adobe's SVG and PDF,
plain text and CSV (Comma Separated Values). Show
supports only standard Microsoft PowerPoint
formats. The company touts that it stands as a
strong alternative to both Microsoft Office and
suite alternatives OpenOffice and StarOffice.

management system that they say minimizes
downtime. Find out more in the November issue of

analytics. SenSage says that they have addressed
the scalability and cost concerns associated with
aggregating, retaining and readily analyzing
activity logs to monitor internal controls and
investigate threats. SenSage can collect data from
a range of sources at a sustained rate of 87,000
events per second and compress it to as little as
10 percent of the original, raw, event-log data in
a searchable format.
Justin Peltier, a senior security consultant with

seminars for the Computer Security Institute, has
a lot of experience in the security realm. He
believes that there are quite a few security
misconceptions and preconceptions out in the IT
world. Here are a few security myths that he
thinks are in place:
1. Patches always fix the security hole.
2. SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption is
secure.
3. Theoretical vulnerabilities don't pose a
danger.
4. Wireless networks are inherently insecure.

According to the FTC figures, ID thieves stole
nearly $100 million from financial institutions last year, an average of
$6,767 per victim. Can you say for certain that your members’ personal
information is safe on your network and that none are being exposed
unencrypted outside your network? Are your employees sending emails with
member names, addresses, and social security numbers included in the
text or in attachments? What about exposures through instant messages
and web mail?
If your answers are “No,” “I don’t know,” or “maybe,” then you need to
take a good look at Compliance Commander from Intrusion. This amazing
product is installed transparently at your internet access point where,
at wire speed, it monitors all unencrypted traffic, looking for matches
to your exact member personal data. When a match is made, the
communication containing member information is blocked and the event is
reported to your IT staff for further investigation and resolution.
Because Compliance Commander sources its detection criteria from your
member databases, there are no false positives.

piloting the use of dialogue towers over the
traditional teller line. Member service
representatives work side by side with members at

Online
Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design
A new AC Nielsen
survey reveals that one in ten of the world’s
population (more than 627 million people) now
shops online. Secure online payments are lacking
in less-developed eCommerce markets, but in more
mature markets like the US, consumers want more
sophisticated payment methods, the survey shows.
In North America, credit cards are the most
commonly used payment method (69 per cent), with
PayPal next at 29 per cent and debit cards third,
at 22 per cent, with almost 6 in 10 naming Visa as
their favored payment card. The firms says that
improved payment options are needed to ensure the
continued growth of online shopping and that
consumers want more sophisticated payment methods
than what are currently available.
The Electronic Payments Network (EPN), the ACH
business of The Clearing House Payments Company,
announced a centralized OFAC (Office of Foreign
Assets Control) screening solution for financial
institutions originating and receiving
cross-border ACH transactions. EPN's OFAC solution
screens cross-border corporate and retail ACH
payments against a centralized OFAC list and
identifies suspect transactions. The centralized
architecture of EPN's OFAC solution allows
institutions to avoid the expense of building and
maintaining their own OFAC screening
infrastructure and tools. It is a web-based
solution that requires no custom software
installation or individual maintenance. EPN's OFAC
solution is part of EPNWATCH, a suite of
risk-management services from EPN that includes
fraud detection, employee fingerprinting, credit
and debit controls, and the Universal Payment
Identification Code (UPIC).
According to CardData, the total number of
American payment cards-in-force rose 9% at
mid-year topping 926 million, setting the pace to
pass the one billion milestone in mid 2006.
CardData notes that over the past five years,
credit cards have grown 24% while signature debit
cards have expanded by 63%.

Safe2Login acts as
a third-party trust authority employing mutual
authentication technologies; a multifactor
positive authentication process coupled with the
ability to authenticate the banking server to the
customer. The recent NCUA and FFIEC Agencies
guidance “Authentication in an Internet Banking
Environment” mandates a need to reliably
authenticate customers and provide defense against
Phishing and Pharming by verifying that the
customer is in fact communicating with the correct
banking server, not a spoofed site. Mutual
Authentication is the methodology required to meet
these goals.
L9.com’s Safe2Login authentication solution was
the recipient of the 2005 CUNA Technology Council
Future Forum “Best of Show" award.
Mutual Authentication is a process whereby
customer identity is authenticated and the target
Web site is authenticated to the customer.
Currently, most credit unions do not authenticate
their Web sites to the customer before collecting
sensitive information. Credit Unions can aid
customers in differentiating legitimate sites from
spoofed sites by authenticating their Web site to
the customer.
Safe2Login’s customer verification process is
classified as a layered Positive Verification
process where Safe2Login, acting as a trusted
third-party, ensures that material information
provided by an applicant during login matches the
information supplied during the secure
registration process. The Safe2Login multifactor
authentication process requires that users know
several pieces of information they supply to the
system in a way that defeats "keyloggers." This
provides the Credit Union with an increased level
of confidence that the customer is who they say
they are.

Telecom giant Inmarsat is poised to launch the
second in a series of two super-satellites that
will provide coverage to 88 percent of the
globe's landmass. Inmarsat's $1.5 billion
project could be one of the first to deliver
broadband data and voice simultaneously to
mobile users with a portable terminal as small
as their laptop computer. They claim that you
will be able to surf the Net - or connect with
the office LAN - at broadband speeds of up to
492 Kbps.
BellSouth and Yahoo announced that they are
teaming up to offer a co-branded broadband
service. Starting in late 2006, the companies
will offer the service, called FastAccess DSL,
in BellSouth's nine-state region. Yahoo already
has similar deals in the with SBC Communications
and Verizon Communications. Adding BellSouth as
