Software Updates Credit unions that rely on Windows 2000 face tough, end-of-lifecycle choices as Microsoft pushes upgrades to Windows Vista, 2003, and Longhorn Server. Office 2007 won't install on Windows 2000, and as other new products emerge from Microsoft in 2007 and beyond it is unlikely that they will either. Microsoft offers five years of "mainstream support" and an additional five years of "extended support" before a business product falls into online-only support. In the case of Windows 2000, mainstream support ended in June 2005. Finally, the beginning and ending dates of Daylight Saving Time in the United States will be significantly altered in 2007, yet there is no patch to update the meaning of DST on Windows 2000. Meanwhile, Microsoft just offered further details and pricing on the next version of Office, announcing plans for a new home version as well as new server-based products and a new high-end enterprise edition of the desktop suite. Office Standard will sell for $399, while Office Professional will sell for $499. On the business side, Microsoft is offering two high-end collections in addition to its professional and standard editions: "professional plus" and "enterprise" editions can only be purchased by businesses through Microsoft's volume-licensing program. With the Professional Plus version, the standard Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook applications are augmented with the Access and Publisher products that come with the professional edition, the Office Communicator instant messaging program, InfoPath form-creation software, and server-based content management and forms management capabilities. The enterprise version adds Groove, a collaboration program.

Biometric Digest Highlights - WWW.BIODIGEST.COM The new BioLock - from Sequiam Biometrics and Weiser, a Black and Decker Company - features a simplistic design that on the outside resembles traditional deadbolt door locks. However, the biometric deadbolt lock features a battery-powered locking mechanism that is activated when authorized users (up to 50) swipe their finger across AuthenTec's FingerLoc fingerprint sensor - eliminating the need for traditional keys. The lock is powered by four AA batteries, which will last through more than a year of normal use. The lock signals ahead of time when batteries need to be replaced - similar to a smoke detector. It also features a traditional key entry option as a backup.

Security Section Gift cards are skyrocketing in popularity with consumers - but they also are gaining favor with criminals. A number of reports claim that enterprising thieves are using gift cards for everything from fraudulent purchases to currency in transactions. Some will copy down the numbers of unclaimed gift cards hanging on store racks, wait for them to be activated, then use the gift cards to make online purchases. However, many store chains thwart this by utilizing additional protections before activating gift cards, such as keeping them behind the store counter or requiring scratch-off activation codes. A more disturbing scam involves criminal groups buying gift cards, preloading them with high dollar amounts, and them using them as currency for their transactions. The cards are especially attractive for international and cross-border trafficking because they circumvent the money reporting requirements for traveling between countries. Call Centers Headset usage in the call center is critical to the job function of member service representatives. Sennheiser Communications makes a wide range of high quality headsets for call centers, and all of their telecom headsets include their ActiveGard circuit which protects the agents hearing at all times. Unfortunately, headset users may be exposed to hazardous incoming noises that can be dangerous to the hearing. The sudden high-pitched signal of an alarm sounding at the other end of the line, for example, can actually cause irreversible damage and pain. Technically referred to as an acoustic burst, a sudden and unexpected variation in sound level can potentially cause long-lasting damage to the human ear; and this can lead to acoustic shock, which can cause symptoms such as headaches, tinnitus, and even loss of hearing. Sennheiser says that ActiveGard effectively addresses these safety concerns.
