Microsoft's latest Security Intelligence Report (SIR) reveals that less than 1 percent of all Windows attacks worldwide in the first half of this year used zero-day exploits. The report also notes that ninety nine percent of all malware infections are due to organizations and users not applying security updates. SIR version 11 is based on data from 600 million Windows machines in more than 100 countries and regions. Overall, Microsoft found that about 45 percent of malware was spread via social engineering, or where user interaction was required to infect the machine: clicking on a URL or opening an infected file, for example. More than 25 percent spread via AutoRun using a USB; 17 percent using AutoRun via a network; and 4 percent via file infector/viruses.

The refreshed line of WAAS devices are all in the WAVE family of products and will over the next one to two years replace the existing, less powerful WAVE and WAE products, Cisco says. Three new WAVE devices, the 294, 594, and 694, support virtual partitioning of compute power and memory for servers that perform functions such as DHCP and network analysis, and have up to five times the throughput.
A recent GFI survey found that 40 percent of small and medium-sized businesses have suffered a security breach due to unsafe Web surfing.
