IBM Ships High-Density Tape Drives Based on Lastest Spec
IBM announced the general availability of the industry’s first magnetic tapes and drives based on the LTO-9 Ultrium specification for massive data capacity and resilience. The Linear Tape-Open (LTO) 9 spec features a 50% improvement in capacity over LTO-8, which translates to 18TB native capacity, or 45TB after data is compressed. Fujifilm and Sony announced media last month, but IBM is the first with a drive.

Druva has introduced what they claim is the industry’s first and only curated recovery technology, leveraging intelligent automation, for accelerated ransomware recovery. They say that Druva Curated Recovery mitigates the impact of a ransomware attack by building an uncorrupted, unencrypted and malware-free recovery point to ensure a successful recovery before one is ever initiated.
Microsoft Releases New Perpetual Office
Microsoft announced the availability of the next edition of perpetual-license Office for commercial customers. Dubbed "Office LTSC 2021," as in "Long-term Support Channel," the new Office suite was built as a subset of the feature catalog of Office 365 (and its more expensive, expansive sibling, Microsoft 365) that, once released, will live unchanged until it exhausts support. However, LTSC 2021 includes only some, but not all, features that are available in versions of Office that come with a Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) plan.
Synology Releases C2 Backup for Windows
Synology announced the launch of its newest Synology C2 cloud application called C2 Backup which provides data protection for Windows devices, whether they are located at home or distributed across multiple offices. With C2 Backup For Individuals and C2 Backup For Businesses, the firm claims that everything on Windows PCs and servers can be securely and efficiently backed up from a single console. This includes system configurations and software, files and folders, and external drives.

Verizon Has Big Plans for Fixed Wireless Access
Verizon's CEO has pointed to fixed wireless access (FWA) as a key tool in its quest to expand its broadband reach further and faster. He explained that Fios and its 4G and 5G FWA products are part of a patchwork of solutions the operator is leveraging to deliver a “full nationwide broadband offering.” He added FWA gives the company an opportunity to serve up broadband to its sprawling base of wireless customers outside its ILEC footprint.
Just over two-thirds of consumers globally (67%) now expect bricks-and-mortar retail stores to accept contactless payments and just under half (44%) wouldn’t shop at a store that only offers payment methods that require contact with a cashier or shared device, a survey of merchants and consumers in nine countries around the world has found. The fifth edition of The Visa Back to Business Study also found that 68% of consumers say that the Covid-19 pandemic has permanently changed how they make payments “with a preference on safer and touchless ways to pay” and that 60% expect to use contactless payments whenever possible in the next three months.

Growth in E-Commerce Is Fueling a Big Rise in CNP Fraud
Despite the percentage of card-not-present fraud transactions steadily hovering in the 10% to 13% range between the first quarter of 2020 and the same period in 2021, the average ticket size for fraudulent CNP transactions has steadily grown during that time, says a report from fraud-prevention platform provider Vesta. Globally, the average ticket for a fraudulent CNP transaction rose from $126 during 2020’s first quarter to $134 in the first quarter this year.
