Hardware News

Dell announced new micro PCs that are well suited to workspaces where space is at a premium and they offer five options for device mounting. The Optiplex 3020 Micro features an Intel Pentium G3240T 3MB Cache Dual Core with HD Graphics, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD as standard. The base configuration Optiplex 9020 Micro comes with an Intel Core i5-4590T Processor Quad Core 6 MB 2.0GHz with HD4600 Graphics, 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM AT 1600MHz, 500 GB 7200RPM HDD. Faster processors and high capacity HDD and SSD storage are available as options.

New servers with Intel's latest Xeon E5-2600 v3 server chips are rolling out from Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo and IBM. The new 18-core chip helps deliver 59 percent better database performance and 61 percent better virtualization performance than its predecessor. The servers are the first with DDR4 memory, which delivers a 40 percent to 50 percent increase in bandwidth and 35 percent reduction in power consumption compared to DDR3 memory, currently in servers. Internal data transfers will be faster with DDR4, and in-memory applications like databases - where a lot of processing takes place in DRAM - are expected to benefit as a result.

Software Updates

If you would like to track social media mentions about your credit union, it can be tedious and time consuming to do so manually. That is where some simple automated tools can help:

* Mention - alerts you whenever you are mentioned anywhere on the Internet and generates activity reports.

* Twilert - allows you to choose a keyword, like your name, and receive an email notification in real time when someone starts talking about it

* Social Mention - allows you to type in your name and get stats on the last time it was mentioned and where

* Twazzup - rounds up mentions and shows you who your top influencers are, as well as top associated keywords

Bethpage Federal Credit Union is working with Quatrro Processing Services and Fortress Risk Management to fight fraud. ATMs/Kiosks

For business continuity purposes, some ATM deployers rely on two wired DSL or cable landline connections. However, having both the primary and backup network running on the same medium generally means that both networks are susceptible to the same, common ISP failures such as local construction incidents, flooding, ice storms, etc. That is why some ATM operators are turning to failover configurations that feature 4G LTE cellular connectivity. The AirLink RJ-11 IP Gateway coupled with the AirLink Raven-E or Raven X provides an affordable upgrade path for converting existing circuit switched telemetry applications to cellular packet data networks. The equipment features remote configuration and monitoring, remote diagnostics and over-the-air firmware upgrades, and can be used for primary or back-up data backhaul.

ATM transaction monitoring system vendors say that their systems can improve your availability and transaction success rates and therefore generate good ROI. They contend that the earlier detection of transaction failures, slowdowns, or anomalies saves money by catching smaller problems before they become much bigger and more expensive problems. The platforms also provide access to key performance metrics (e.g., decline rates, transaction volumes, etc.) in real-time and allow you to easily spot patterns, trends and anomalies.

Wireless World

According to Novantas, national banks are winning more consumers who want to bank digitally because people believe big banks have better mobile banking solutions. They point to a recent BankChoice Monitor survey of consumers shopping for new checking accounts on FindABetterBank.com that found that 36% of shoppers say they must have mobile banking with their next checking account — shoppers under 30 are more than twice as likely to require mobile banking compared with shoppers over age 60 or older. On FindABetterBank, shoppers 50 or older are the most likely shoppers to select small institutions and shoppers under 30 are more likely to select national banks.

Gartner predicts that by 2016 smartwatches will comprise about 40 percent of consumer wrist-worn devices. Gartner noted that seven out of the top 10 smartphone vendors have entered the wearables market to date or are about to ship a first product. This may mean that credit unions will have to step up their mobile banking support options in the years ahead. In a related story, Samsung announced that their next generation of smartwatches will have a fingerprint sensor to be used for mobile payments via PayPal.

CU*Answers, a data processing CUSO based in Michigan, offers mobile banking via browser for free to its members as part of its core package. CU*Answers` It's Me 24/7 service allows access to a mobilized version of online banking via mobile devices. Members can pay bills, check balances, transfer funds and do other essential mobile banking tasks. App versions of It's Me 24/7, which can be customized for a credit union, are also available but require an investment to cover app development costs.

MasterCard employees around the world, using both Android and iOS operating systems, have been trialing the system. MasterCard already has experience with biometrics with the recent launch of the Nigerian eID card scheme, which combines payment card functionality with a mix of fingerprint, facial and iris recognition.

Cisco has launched what it claims is the industry's first "threat-focused next-generation" firewall, Cisco ASA with Firepower Services. The system provides application control, intrusion prevention systems, and advanced malware protection from Sourcefire. The networking giant says that the solution helps assess threats, correlate intelligence, and optimize defenses to protect networks. Pricing starts at $5,000.

Technology and Marketing

More than half of American loyalty program members (54%) are unhappy with the reward options offered by their favorite brands and 48% have experienced frustration during the reward redemption process, according to research results released by COLLOQUY and FanXchange. Plus, 93% of U.S. consumers said the type of reward offered is a “very important” or “somewhat important” factor in their decisions to join a loyalty program and to remain engaged with a brand. Also from the research: American consumers rate live event tickets – concerts, sports or theater – as more appealing (56%) than airline tickets (44%). The authors of the report conclude that "savvy brands should consider offering experiential rewards, especially to live events that provide an opportunity to connect with members on a more emotional level."

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

Many smaller credit unions find it a daunting task to start and run a prepaid card program. Capital Prepaid Services says that they can set up a credit union in as little as six weeks to offer and manage their BlazePays card which is a prepaid Visa card that lets consumers store value up to $10,000 and carries a $5.95 monthly fee. Cardholders can load more value at any of 50,000 retail locations in Visa`s ReadyLink reload network, which includes Wal-Mart stores.

The Rabo Scanner is a VASCO DIGIPASS Authenticator featuring CrontoSign technology that uses visual transaction signing. CrontoSign technology utilizes a next generation QR code which is a color cryptographic matrix displayed on the member's tablet, smartphone or PC screen. During an online banking transaction, the member uses a VASCO card reader with an embedded camera and color display to capture the QR code from the screen of their device. This allows the member to see the details of what the credit union believes the member has requested, specifically the amount of the transaction and the payee. This information is encrypted in the high definition QR-code. VASCO says that their system mitigates the increasing risk of banking malware and Man-in-the-Middle attacks, and provides the member and the credit union an assurance that the payment instructions have not been altered.

Internet Access

CloudFlare announced Keyless SSL, a system that allows an organization to move its public-facing Web infrastructure to the cloud, while at the same time keeping its private SSL keys on its own internal servers. With a conventional SSL system, the private key used to sign all sessions is normally held on the same public-facing server used to fulfill Web traffic. Keyless SSL, however, keeps the private keys in the customer's data center, and the key itself is never seen by CloudFlare or anyone else. Whenever the key is needed in the cloud, the actual key-signing request is transmitted via a private tunnel to the customer's servers (that are running an agent) where the signing itself takes place.

DigiCert released a free tool which helps system administrators analyze their use of SHA-1 hashing algorithms across all domains and subdomains and map out a path for SHA-2 migration. The company says that their tool saves time and effort by providing a comprehensive analysis of an organization`s certificate landscape, including where SHA-1 certificates exist, which software and hardware support SHA-2, and a review of how Google`s new timelines may affect any given site. Google recently announced that they would accelerate deprecation of SHA-1 certificates, including giving untrusted warnings to sites with SHA-1 certificates that expire in 2016.
