Zipwhip Signs 50 CU Clients in Q1

Zipwhip, a Seattle-based company providing text messaging services for businesses via landline phones, is reporting 50 new credit union clients during the first quarter of 2017.

Consumers Prefer Fingerprint Scanners

Consumers feel more comfortable with fingerprint scanning than with other types of biometric technology, including face, eye, voice and other biometric measurements, according to a survey from the Center for Identity at The University of Texas at Austin. The report finds 58 percent of those surveyed say they feel very comfortable with fingerprint scanning biometrics. Only about a third reported feeling very comfortable with any other biometric type.



Dell Previews Modular Architecture and Brings AI and NVMe into PowerMax Storage

Dell Technologies says the days of general-purpose servers attempting to be used for everything are over. The company has unveiled its modular Kinetic architecture which will allow for the addition of field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), extra processors, graphics capabilities, I/O connectivity, and storage as required. The first product in this series will be the PowerEdge MX server later this year, and in the meantime Dell is releasing a 32-drive, 4 CPU and 4 GPU PowerEdge 940xa, as well as the smaller 2u R840 capable of holding 24 NVMe drives and two additional GPUs or FPGAs.

Word-of-Mouth Recommendations Are Failing Mobile-Payments Services

Coveted word-of-mouth advertising is failing the mobile-payments services offered by technology giants, according to the 2018 Mobile Pay Tracker report from Auriemma Consulting Group. Mobile payment users often encounter acceptance issues — the reader isn’t clearly visible or the payment fails — that deter them from the positive word-of-mouth referral.



Mobile Commerce Numbers Continue to Surge

Mobile commerce sales grew 29% to $153 billion in 2017 from the prior year, making up one-third of online retail revenue, according to a report from Forrester Research. However, this rate will gradually slow as the market matures, growing by 13% a year to make up half of U.S. online retail sales growth by 2022, Mobile Marketer reported.

Microsoft Announces Several New Intelligence Security Tools

Microsoft released Microsoft Secure Score and Attack Simulator. Secure Score makes it easier for organizations to determine which controls to enable to help protect users, data and devices by quickly assessing readiness and providing an overall security benchmark score. It will also let organizations compare their results to those with similar profiles using built-in machine learning. Attack Simulator, a part of Office 365 Threat Intelligence, lets security teams run simulated attacks — including mock ransomware and phishing campaigns — to event-test their employees’ responses and tune configurations accordingly.



Endpoints Still Vulnerable to Breaches Despite Antivirus Tech Advancements: Survey

According to a Minerva Labs survey, the malware evasion techniques that posed the biggest concern are avoidance of malware analysis and forensic tools (32%) followed by fileless or memory injection attacks (24%). Attacks that use malicious documents also raised concerns (24%). Two-thirds of respondents (67%) were concerned that existing controls won't prevent a significant malware attack on the endpoints. Furthermore, the survey found that over half of the respondents (53%) preferred adding a meaningful layer to their endpoint security stack instead of completely replacing their existing AV.

$73 million White Rose Credit Union installed a digital sign within a distinctive, 18-foot-high pylon. It rotates marketing pitches for loans and the CU’s financial products with messages supporting students at the middle school and high school down the street, reminders of community events, and even road closure alerts. They have seen an influx of loan applications and membership applications from people coming in off the street as a result of messaging center.

Mastercard Pioneers Remote Biometric Card Enrollment

Mastercard has unveiled techonlogy that allows people to register their fingerprint onto their biometric card from the comfort of their home. Their fingerprint is scanned by the sensor on the card and an encrypted digital template is created and securely stored.



Instagram Quietly Launches Payments for Commerce

Instagram just stealthily added a native payments feature to its app for some users. It lets you register a debit or credit card as part of a profile, set up a security pin, then start buying things without ever leaving Instagram.



Splitit Launches Installment Payment Solution for Debit Cards

Splitit, a leading monthly payment solution, announced the launch of its debit card installment payment offering in the US and Europe. Using Splitit, consumers are now able to split their purchases of $400 or less into up to three interest-free monthly payments using their existing debit cards. Additionally, using Splitit, consumers can continue to split any cost into up to 12 interest-free payments on an existing credit card without the need for applications or registrations for new credit lines.

Verizon Teams up with Cisco, Juniper to Create a Single Disaggregated Platform for Edge Routers

Verizon is using its software-defined networking technology, along with collaboration with Cisco and Juniper Networks, to put all of its existing edge routers for Ethernet and IP-based services onto a single platform. By simplifying the network edge, Verizon said it can make improvements in the deployment and provisioning of infrastructure on its networks as well as in customer-facing areas such as Ethernet, Internet and VPN-based services.
