Intel and Partner Ecosystem Offer New Silicon-Enabled Security Solutions

Intel, along with customers and industry partners, announced several solutions designed to scale and accelerate the adoption of hardware-enabled security across data center, cloud, network and edge. Intel Software Guard Extensions was designed to help create more secure environments without having to trust the integrity of all the layers of the system. The technology isolates specific application code and data to run in private regions of memory, or enclaves. The company just announced new products and ecosystem solutions that enable Intel SGX to be used even more broadly in the data center.

Western Digital Launches SSDs for Different Enterprise Use Cases

The Western Digital Ultrastar DC SN630 NVMe SSD and the Western Digital CL SN720 NVMe SSD both sport internally developed controller and firmware architectures, 64-layer 3D NAND technology and a NVMe interface, but that’s about where the similarities end. The SN630 is a read-intensive drive capable of two disk writes per day, which means it has the performance to write the full capacity of the drive two times per day. Meanwhile, the SN720 is a boot device optimized for edge servers and hyperscale cloud with a lot more sequential performance.

ATM Company Working with Secret Service to Stop Attacks

A privately held ATM processing and management company is collaborating with the U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement agencies to stop so-called man-in-the-middle attacks against ATMs. Payment Alliance International (PAI) said it plans to use proprietary real-time reporting software to alert the agencies of potential attacks in progress so that they can catch criminals in the act. Man-in-the-middle attacks on ATMs typically involve scammers embedding devices on ATMs in order to intercept the terminals’ connections to their wireless communication boxes.

Cisco and Verizon Build a Mobile SD-WAN Offering with 5G

Verizon and Cisco announced a partnership to build a mobile SD-WAN offering, which leverages Verizon’s future 5G network. This is the first time Cisco has brought a mobile component, on the cellular side, to SD-WAN. Cellular mobility, they say, brings security, trust, and reliability.

Consumers Prefer Single Mobile Banking/Payments App

Usage figures from a recent survey revealed that approximately three out of five mobile device owners (59 percent) report using their banking app at least twice a week. Apps for mobile payments are less widely used than banking apps, the results showed, with only a third of mobile device owners (33 percent) using them on a weekly basis. While nearly three-quarters of mobile device owners (71 percent) have used mobile payment apps, only 7 percent use payment apps daily compared to 20 percent who use banking apps daily.

FIs Can Expect to Pay Millions More Fighting Account-Application Fraud

FIs will face an uphill battle fighting account-application fraud in the next few years, according to a new report from Aite. “Fraudsters are nurturing synthetic or manufactured identities for many months or years, establishing credit-bureau reports, obtaining mobile phones, and taking other steps to make such identities extremely difficult to detect,” the report says. Among other things, the report recommends that FIs broaden their authentication sources for account applicants.

Microsoft is taking its cybersecurity efforts to the cloud with the debut of its Azure Sentinel security information and event management (SIEM) tool. By using artificial intelligence, Azure Sentinel serves as a unified location for tracking security issues across an organization. It not only monitors security in Azure cloud environments, but also in rival cloud environments such Amazon Web Services.

Virtual Routing Startup Volta Takes on Cisco, Juniper and Others

Volta Networks is seeking to shake up the router sector with its cloud-based virtual routing software. They claim that their Virtual Elastic Routing Engine (VEVRE) can reduce the total cost of ownership by 90% when compared to legacy routers. VEVRE can scale up to 255 virtual routers per switch at a fraction of the cost of routers from traditional vendors, according to the Boston-based firm.
