Microservices are small, discrete chunks of functionality that interact with other microservices to create a larger system. Although the basic idea of having such discrete components isn’t new, the way microservices are implemented makes them a natural foundation for both modern cloud-based applications. TMD Security announced the launch of One Touch Access Security, a mobile app for securely opening and closing locks on ATM top boxes, safes and a wide variety of access points including secure rooms and branches. The One Touch Access Security app is available for mobile phones and PDAs, and removes the need for physical keys and cards.
Microsoft has released nearly a thousand security patches for its Windows 7-based operating system since the software giant made that its standard platform in 2009. The author states that the outdated OS drives millions of ATMs around the world, but on Jan. 14, 2020, Microsoft is ending standard support for the software. If a credit union doesn’t migrate, keeping its ATMs secure will become more difficult and expensive once Microsoft stops issuing security patches.

The good news for mobile- payments proponents is that The Pew Charitable Trusts found more than half, 56%, of its respondents had made a payment with a smart phone in the preceding year. Extrapolated, that means approximately 143 million adults had made a least one mobile payment over that time. But many people have a twinge of anxiety about financial loss from mobile payments. Some of this trepidation stems from not trusting the security technology, and part of it comes from confusion about regulations meant to protect consumers from loss.

FileCloud, a cloud-agnostic enterprise file sync and sharing platform, unveiled Smart DLP, which they say is an intelligent, rule-driven solution that enables organizations to prevent data leaks in real time and secure content across on-premise and public cloud environments. The solution is capable of supporting AWS and Microsoft Azure.
FireEye announced the availability of FireEye Digital Threat Monitoring – which they claim is a new way for customers to defend their digital footprint. The software automatically collects and analyzes content on the dark and open web, alerting defenders whenever a potential threat is detected.

The Financial Brand looked at marketing budgets from NCUA call reports from over 200 credit unions, comparing them against asset growth, profitability, and ROA. Compared to banks, credit unions are growing more aggressive with their marketing. Plus In 2018 the portion of the sample group spending over 0.10% of assets on marketing hit 67%, versus 53% in 2015. In 2018, the credit unions studied generated on average $16.39 of net income for every dollar they spent on marketing. This profit level compares to $12.22 in 2015 for the same group of credit unions.
Just as payments are evolving at a rapid pace with new providers and payment methods, so is their unpleasant companion: payments fraud. Payments fraud is a subset of identity fraud, impacting both consumers and businesses, and occurs when a fraudster has stolen someone’s credit or debit card number or financial account data. For the U.S. financial industry, tackling the problem means weighing speed versus security, friction versus fraud.
While Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank President Patrick Harker believes it’s “inevitable” that central banks will eventually issue digital currencies, he warned that the United States shouldn’t be first in line. But Harker said his opinion is currently “in the minority” at the Fed. Two years ago, Chairman Jerome Powell told conference attendees at Yale Law School that digital currencies issued by a central bank would become global targets for cyberattacks, cyber counterfeiting and cybertheft.
