Hardware News

When it comes to protecting surveillance cameras located outside of the branch, you will need to consider using special mounting brackets and housings to protect the camera or weatherproof cameras. Look for the IP rating which determines how well the camera itself stands up to the elements. The first digit in the rating refers to the dust, while the second refers to how waterproof it is. A ‘5` is moderate where as a ‘6` means it is dustproof or waterproof. For electrical connections, the most common ratings in the security field are NEMA3, meaning that the box is weather-resistant and protects against weather hazards such as rain and sleet, and NEMA4, rating the enclosure as watertight.

Hewlett-Packard announced a new price structure which they say will help remove cost barriers to flash storage adoption. The company is offering the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 all-flash starter kit at a base price of $35,000, and will continue to collaborate with VMware to integrate the kit on its planned Virtual Volumes (VVols) storage architecture.

Software Updates

Dell's Backup & Disaster Recovery Suite, announced last week, is a bundle consisting of three software components previously available separately:

- AppAsure

- NetVault Backup

- vRanger

Dell says that under the new pricing structure customers can either 1) avoid overpaying for backup features that they don't need, or 2) under-protect important mission-critical data.

Symantec has consolidated its diverse Norton line of security software from nine products into one online service that can be used across desktop computers and mobile devices. The product, dubbed "Norton Security," will cost $79 a year.

NCR Solidcore Suite for APTRA is security software for ATMs that utilizes whitelisting technology. The software proactively allows only authorized code to run, rather than reacting to known attacks as they arise.

Risco is an Israel-based security technology company looking to work with ATM deployers to protect their machines. Basic sensors can alert if the machine is tipped, shaken, or struck. More elaborate seismic sensors monitor for tampering efforts that use drills, sledgehammers, torches, explosives, etc.

Wireless World

A recent report from Nielsen found that consumers age 18 to 24 account for 55 percent of mobile payment service users. No single service has come to dominate the space yet, but mobile payment tools such as Venmo and Popmoney have taken off Millennials. In fact, PayPal has tapped Venmo for one-touch in-app payments. One Touch lets merchant integrate PayPal payments so that buyers can make purchases without having to enter user IDs, passwords and card numbers.

Behaviosec, a Swedish security startup, offers security technology for mobile apps that tracks the pressure and speed of how users type a PIN into their smartphones. There are many nuances in the way people type, such as rhythm and pressure on the keys. The company claims a high success rate on verification: it reached 99.7% session accuracy when it trialed it`s behavior-tracking technology in conjunction with a PIN for a Nordic bank. They also say that they can detect a false user in between 20 to 60 seconds of them picking up a smartphone. Additionally, the startup is looking into using a device's gyroscope and accelerometer to authenticate users even more quickly.

Hexadite offers an Automated Incident Response Solution (AIRS) that is not a detection system itself, but rather integrates with detection tools such IDS/IPS, SIEM, anti-virus, DLP, etc. The company aims to harness the alerts from those systems and follow-up on them. After collecting relevant data on the alert, the system analyzes it using proprietary algorithms to determine the best course of action for remediation. The actions can be as automated or manual as you choose, e.g., isolate a device with suspicious activity, block a user from network access, temporarily lower the privileges allocated to a user's account, suspend specific processes running on an endpoint, etc. The startup says that when their system is in fully automated mode, it typically takes just minutes from the time the detection system raises an alert to the time an incident is remediated.

In an effort to battle inside fraud, the NCUA has created a seven-part online series entitled “Deterring, Preventing and Detecting Employee Dishonesty.” They are available for viewing on NCUA`s YouTube channel. They include “The Fraud Triangle,” which includes:

- an employee`s motivation

- rationalization

- opportunity to engage in criminal activity

We Will Pay Your Crypto-Ransom If You Get Hit With Ransomware

Why Security Awareness Training? Ransomware, That's Why...

Ransomware attacks cause downtime, data loss, possible intellectual property theft, and in certain industries a ransomware attack is considered a data breach.

Multiple ransomware strains are now attacking your end-users. You cannot just rely on your filters - you also have to step your end-users through effective security awareness training. Since September 2013, ransomware has become vicious, has inspired several copycats, and
the first strains of second-generation ransomware have been identified.

Here are some real system administrator quotes of sites hit with ransomware:

1. "Just Paid Cryptolocker - We got infected, found our backups did not work and we had to pay."
2. "Went through this 2 weeks ago - We had backups, but that meant we lost a day and a half."
3. "CryptoDefense deleted my Shadow Volume Copies - that really caused a major problem."
4. "Cryptolocker is the nastiest thing on the web at the moment."
5. "Ouch. This stinks" - Our comptroller opened the attachment, and her PC got infected. The phishing email passed through hosted email filtering, our "advanced" firewall and the AV on the workstation."

Get a Quote for your organization now and your users trained ASAP. If your files get encrypted due to human error after your user steps through our training, KnowBe4 will pay the crypto-ransom. Find out how affordable this is for your credit union. Click on the link and GET A QUOTE NOW:

Technology and Marketing

While it may seem relevant to tout the credit union's great rates on loans and deposit products on social media and blogs, many surveys have shown that people really like to share content when it's entertaining or has some emotional content. For example, credit unions could focus on their volunteer efforts and cover the goodwill they generate in their communities. A recent real world example is Alliance Credit Union's offer of 0% loans to Ferguson, MO business owners affected by the civil unrest.

Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

According to the Aite Group, less than 400 U.S. financial institutions replaced their online banking platforms during each of the last three years, and FIs' annual online banking budgets are mainly allotted to the recurring costs associated with existing deployments. The research firm notes that consumer online banking replacements present high costs and risks, and institutions have a tendency to proceed with caution even in the best of times due to potential consumer impacts. They are predicting a $1.8 billion dollar spend on consumer online banking systems in 2016 by FIs.

CFI Group released the findings of the firm's second installment of its Credit Union Satisfaction Index, finding that online and mobile banking is more important than any other aspect of the member experience. The survey shows that 89 percent of respondents aged 18-49 do at least half of their online banking remotely compared to 80 percent of those aged 50 and older. While mobile and online banking play a crucial part in member satisfaction, the convenience of a branch's location is one of the top member considerations when joining a credit union, even though visits to the actual branch are declining.

Call Centers

The IntelliResponse Virtual Agent is a customized solution that is designed to take a load off of a credit union's contact center. In action, the system uses natural language questions and does its best to match these questions with a single correct answer. Most centers load anywhere between 250 to 500 or more answers into their system. The platform can be installed on a website, mobile website and/or Facebook page. The company touts more than 450 clients, 60 of which are credit unions.
