Live collaboration has been a major focus of Office 2016, which Microsoft released about eighteen months ago. Initially they focused on real-time co-authoring for the desktop version of Word, then expanded those capabilities to PowerPoint. Now Excel has been add to the list, but real-time collaboration requires keeping files in one of Microsoft`s online file storage systems. When using the co-authoring features, users` profile pictures will appear at the top of the ribbon in the Excel window. Clicking on a profile picture will let users jump to where another person is working on the spreadsheet, to view their edits.

The London police are doing their part to battle ATM fraud via their Twitter account - they send out tweets when they discover ATM scams. They are also encouraging all ATM users to cover their hand when entering their PIN to help thwart pinhole security cameras. Meanwhile in New York, police are warning that scammers are installing card-skimming electronics on one machine, then damaging nearby machines to force users to move to the compromised one.

In a related story, FICO reported that the number of compromised card readers at U.S. ATMs, restaurants and merchants that they monitor rose 30 percent between 2015 and 2016. The FICO Card Alert Service, which monitors hundreds of thousands of ATMs and other card readers in the United States, notes that the majority of compromises between 2015 and 2016 — about 60 percent — occurred at non-FI ATMs. The good news is that the average duration of an exploit continued to fall — on average, an ATM or POS device would be compromised for 11 days, compared with 14 days in 2015 and 36 days in 2014.

Aila Technologies has developed a kiosk that scans government-issued IDs, loyalty cards, insurance card, credit cards, student IDs or work IDs. Aila's image-based scanner can capture both IDs and barcodes, in addition to 1D/2D barcodes, QR codes, Digimarc barcodes and more. The iOS-based interactive kiosk is self-contained and users can scan IDs through its integrated scanner technology and the familiar touchscreen interface of an iPad.

The “quick balance” feature of mobile banking that does not require a login is growing in popularity among many FIs, both large and small. Users enjoy the feature: according to the most recent Malauzai Software's Monkey Insights report, mobile bankers will access their mobile and online banking accounts more frequently, even twice as often, if they don`t actually have to complete the login process. They found that quick balance users access their online accounts 36 times per month, while that number falls to 18 times per month for smartphone end users not using quick balance mode.

Examples of activities that produce signals include making a purchase, searching online for information about a financial product, clicking on an ad, applying for a loan, and paying off debt. B2B invoicing and payments company Viewpost has partnered with Visa to enable digital payments for small and medium businesses. Visa explains how it will work: “With Visa virtual commercial cards, Viewpost`s SMB customers will be able to benefit from Viewpost electronic payment capabilities and use of a secure, one-time Visa virtual account number that includes payment date and amount. Once a virtual card payment is made through Viewpost, the supplier will receive a one-time card number for posting funds to its merchant account." The companies note that any card-issuing FI can support the system.

The 2017 Video Banking Report found that more than 70% of the 282 FI executives surveyed said their video banking service increased the perception that their institution was an innovator. Other findings from the survey include:

Call Centers

Amazon recently announced Chime, a cloud-based Unified Communication as a Service (UCaaS) offering, and now they have rolled out Connect, a contact center as a service offering hosted in the Amazon Web Services cloud. Amazon Connect is a completely cloud-based contact center platform that AWS claims can be set up in minutes and customized and used by line of business workers. It can accept incoming and make outgoing calls, including optional toll-free numbers. Customizable features include hours of operation, queues to route calls to specific agents, creation of prompts and analytics to monitor the system. Like other cloud-based contact center offerings, it requires no on-premises hardware and is billed on a pay-as-you-go model instead of a per-seat license.
