Some ATM deployers that have migrated their ATMs to EMV have noticed an uptick in cards being left behind. That is because the cards must be left in the machines so the chip can be read throughout the transaction which leads some users to simply take their cash and leave their cards behind. In response, some deployers have upgraded their ATM's code so that it requires that the card be removed prior to opening the shutter door to dispense the cash. By some estimates, 60% of ATMs around the world are card-before-cash.

Some credit unions use stand-alone, deposit-taking ATMs as infill points in markets where they have a fairly well covered branch network. CFO's like the fact that ATMs only require about 5-10 percent of a branch`s operating expenses. Of course, ATM locations are just a critical as branch locations in order to be successful: high traffic area, good visibility, easy drive-up access/parking, etc.

Technology and Marketing

According to Cisco, 84% of all marketing communications will be visual by 2018, with video making up 80% of all web traffic by 2020. Video proponents contend that video is taking center stage as one of the fastest growing channels for communicating key information to employees and consumers alike. Research from Accenture Interactive found that 58% of surveyed consumers said they would be more likely to engage with a brand that uses video as a main channel for how-tos, followed by product demos (46%) and insider exclusives (28%). Their report concluded that businesses stand to win big if they focus on creating strategic video content to educate, show authenticity and build customer relationships.

Federal Reserve governor Jerome Powell is not keen on central bank-issued digital currencies even as China and England, among other nations, explore them. He believes that they raise serious security and privacy concerns and could become a prime target for cyber-criminals. While he is somewhat more bullish about the distributed ledger technology (AKA blockchain) behind digital currencies, he contends that there are still technical and risk issues for firms and that the legal foundations supporting DLT need attention.

For extra security, Firefox users can disable extensions, services and themes by running the browser in Safe Mode. You can start Firefox with the "-safe-mode" parameter, however this does not disable plugins. It should be noted that Firefox in this safe mode is not as secure as Guest Mode on a Chromebook or running Tails Linux off a USB flash drive, but it is more secure than regular browsing.
