A new patent filed by Apple indicates that the smartphone manufacturer will be moving towards enabling mobile payments with its new device, the iPhone6. Their patent application is for a contactless method that initiates mobile payments at the point of sale through NFC and then hands the transaction off to a Bluetooth connection for completion. However the Smart Card Alliance believes that Bluetooth's security is innately weaker than NFC's security and thinks that NFC is a superior solution.
Geico and USAA have incorporated voice recognition in their mobile apps, and now Wells Fargo is testing it out as well. The goal is to advance voice commands beyond simply moving through the app and into more complicated tasks. One example is being able to extract spending habits by asking questions such as “How much did I spend at restaurants last month?”
Feedzai, a 5 year old European firm, just launched its anti-fraud service in the U.S. They use big data and machine learning routines to generate a score for each transaction. The company claims that they can deliver scores ranging from zero to 1,000 on each transaction in the time it takes for Google to serve up online search results. Pricing is under a penny per transaction and varies with volume.
Javelin Strategy and Research estimates card fraud impacted 7.5 million Americans in 2012, amounting to nearly $8 billion in losses. Their studies suggest that more FIs need to alert cardholders when a card-not-present transaction occurs in an account, in view of the growth of CNP fraud. Institutions that earned positive scores in fraud detection offered round-the-clock account suspension following a fraud incident, promoted zero liability for fraudulent transactions, and offered identity fraud resolution assistance to cardholders.
