Wireless World

A new patent filed by Apple indicates that the smartphone manufacturer will be moving towards enabling mobile payments with its new device, the iPhone6. Their patent application is for a contactless method that initiates mobile payments at the point of sale through NFC and then hands the transaction off to a Bluetooth connection for completion. However the Smart Card Alliance believes that Bluetooth's security is innately weaker than NFC's security and thinks that NFC is a superior solution.

Geico and USAA have incorporated voice recognition in their mobile apps, and now Wells Fargo is testing it out as well. The goal is to advance voice commands beyond simply moving through the app and into more complicated tasks. One example is being able to extract spending habits by asking questions such as “How much did I spend at restaurants last month?”

Feedzai, a 5 year old European firm, just launched its anti-fraud service in the U.S. They use big data and machine learning routines to generate a score for each transaction. The company claims that they can deliver scores ranging from zero to 1,000 on each transaction in the time it takes for Google to serve up online search results. Pricing is under a penny per transaction and varies with volume.

Javelin Strategy and Research estimates card fraud impacted 7.5 million Americans in 2012, amounting to nearly $8 billion in losses. Their studies suggest that more FIs need to alert cardholders when a card-not-present transaction occurs in an account, in view of the growth of CNP fraud. Institutions that earned positive scores in fraud detection offered round-the-clock account suspension following a fraud incident, promoted zero liability for fraudulent transactions, and offered identity fraud resolution assistance to cardholders.

GTE Financial has introduced GTE Get Fit which tracks members’ steps and other physical activities and rewards them with cash and discounts to local businesses based on the work they put in. Online Banking/E-Commerce/Website Design

Search capabilities vary from website to website, but dynamic knowledge database proponents argue that their systems are far superior and help reduce expensive contact center interactions. All systems cover popular inquiries, but some are going above and beyond with features such as integration into social media and mobile banking channels. Some credit unions run direct mail and email marketing campaigns touting the powers of their self help online systems directly to members who frequently contact their call center.

Korea’s Hana Financial Group has worked to make their website as mobile-optimized as possible. Korea has very high mobile penetration rates and their website is in response to this demand. They have developed an app and accompanying workflow that they claim can process a mortgage online in five steps from application to closing.

Internet Access

For organizations that are thinking about switching from fixed to wireless Internet access, Sierra Wireless has launched the AirLink ES440 LTE gateway. The ES440 can be used to provide a primary or secondary wireless network connection and supports 4G speeds at up to 100Mbps. It is compatible with AT&T's and Verizon Wireless' respective LTE networks.

The LogiTech CC3000e ($999) is an upgrade to their existing conference-based system, the BCC950 ($249). While the BCC950 was geared to provide video conferencing for up to five people, the CC3000e is aimed for rooms that can handle up to 10 attendees. The system utilizes a HD webcam and a speakerphone for audio - the system then ties into a computer via USB cable. Displaying the image on a larger screen can be done through standard projector inputs. The camera provides a 90-degree field of view, H.264 support, 10x zoom and a 260-degree pan, 130-degree-tilt,

Sprint Complete Collaboration, the telecomm's managed and cloud-based unified communications (UC) solution, now supports Microsoft Lync. Sprint’s UC portfolio provides unified communications across multiple locations and devices; it includes integrated SIP Trunking and enhanced mobility with features such as mobile access to meetings, presence and availability status, and instant messaging while away from the office.

Call Centers

Some contact centers use Skype, Oovoo or FaceTime to conduct hiring interviews with candidates, but now there is a new tool called InterviewStream that offers online, pre-recorded video interview questions. Candidates can launch their interview process the moment they apply for a job. The video questions - which can be from a library or custom developed - can replace a general phone screening process or focus on ensuring candidates have depth in a particular skill set.
