CU*NorthWest announced that it posted one of its most successful years with respect to new members processed on its CU*BASE core processing platform. CU*NorthWest now serves over 100,600 members from 30 credit unions across six states: Washington, Oregon, Colorado, California, Montana and Alaska.
Bluepoint Solutions announced Tigard, OR-based NW Preferred Federal Credit Union has selected its document imaging solution, FASTdocs. The company says that the switch to FASTdocs will allow the credit union to streamline internal operations and optimize system maintenance and oversight.
NuVision Federal Credit Union, a full-service credit union with 14 branches located in Los Angeles and Orange Counties and Arizona, has deployed the MeridianLink platform to automate the opening of new accounts. NuVision is currently offering XpressAccounts to members via their online channel but they plan to have the system available through branch offices in the future.
Absolute Software, a provider of persistent endpoint security and management solutions for computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones, announced that it will extend its products to use Google Maps to provide improved device geolocation tracking in its Absolute Computrace product. The geolocation capabilities of Absolute Computrace include recent and historical location information for a device, as well as the ability to build geofences to contain devices within a specific geographical area. The company says that using Google Maps technology will allow their customers to track devices and be alerted of risks with the highest accuracy.

Panasonic has introduced eight new cameras to round out its top-of-the-line 6 Series and standard 3 Series video surveillance camera lineups. Both the 6 Series and 3 Series share key features including high-definition resolution video images at a fast 60 frames per second, and they offer Panasonic Enhanced Super Dynamic and Adaptive Black Stretch (ABS) technologies. The new fixed network cameras also support an optional front IR LED attachment that can illuminate up to 100 feet with infrared light and enable the capture of clear images in low light or complete darkness.
Lenovo announced a new, ultra-slim computer monitor: the ThinkVision X24. The bezel-less 24-inch display boasts OLED-style thinness thanks to its back panel, which uses PCM (pre-coated metal) technology instead of the traditional rear cover. It is an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel with 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, and features both HDMI and DisplayPort inputs. The X24 starts at $249.
Nearly 15 percent of people around the world will use a tablet this year. But growth in the number of users is expected to drop dramatically, says research firm eMarketer. The US will take second place after China with 156 million tablet users in 2015. Despite the rise in users, the overall growth will drop this year and over the next few years, according to the study. Tablets are facing greater competition from big-screen smartphones, aka phablets, as well as other connected devices.
Microsoft's Advanced Notification Service (ANS), which for over a decade provided advanced warning about the patches and updates that the company would push out on its monthly Patch Tuesday, will no longer be available through blog posts and on the web page reserved for the final advisory. Instead, only Premier customers and organizations involved in the company's security programs will receive the traditional heads-up. Microsoft has offered an alternative way for administrators who aren't Microsoft customers to see which patches and updates they need to apply: a customizable, web service and dashboard called myBulletins. However, myBulletins does not send notifications - you must log in to the service to see the security bulletins.
Credit unions using VMware's virtualization platform may want to look at their vRealize Log Insight package. This is VMware's log analysis tool that extends well beyond your virtual environment - it can collect a large variety of data. In addition to the overall ease of use which is facilitated by wizards and GUIs, vRealize Log Insight includes a developer's guide to provide richer capabilities; plus, it integrates directly with vCenter.
Diebold and Corning Incorporated have teamed up to introduce the first ATM touch screen featuring a glass frontage embedded with antimicrobial agent, ionic silver, which inhibits the growth of algae, mold, mildew, fungi and bacteria on its surface. They will offer the special glass as an option on its suite of self-service terminals, including the recently launched 5500, 3500, 3700 and 9900 series ATMs, as well as a retrofit option for existing ATMs. Unfortunately, the solution can't do anything in regards to the cleanliness of the bills being distributed - according to biologists at New York University each dollar bill carries about 3000 types of bacteria on its surface.
By some estimates, cash handling cost accounts for 40% of ATM operational cost. ATM cash recycling proponents like to point out that cash recyclers have quick paybacks due to these high costs. According to GRG`s cash recycling experience in China, cash recyclers reduced cash handling costs by more than $9000 per year.
Contactless transactions via chip cards or mobile devices are an attractive way to combat ATM skimming - if the card never touches the machine then it cannot be skimmed. Yet contactless is not feasible on a widespread basis in the short term, so anti-skimming technologies continue to progress. Wincor Nixdorf is one ATM manufacturer that is looking at new solutions in the anti-skimming battle. One option may be optical surveillance which alerts the credit union when the ATM's fascia is manipulated in any way.

Softcard, formerly known as Isis, wants to position itself as Android users' preferred mobile payment option. The group says that there are hundreds of millions of NFC handsets in place which lays the groundwork for their mobile wallet. Many analysts agree that the group must play up its Android support, and avoid engaging in an all-out advertising war with Apple Pay.
Moven has modified a smartphone app that helps users manage their money to work on a smartwatch - their so-called "health tracker for your finances" provides users with a real time analysis of their recent spending activity. It features a spending meter that turns red, green, or yellow based on the current month's spending compared to the previous month and the wearer's budget. It also will send wearers alerts after they make a purchase, letting them know how the amount they just spent will impact their budget. Canada's Toronto Dominion Bank recently followed in the footsteps of WestPac NZ and licensed Moven's mobile financial management software to enable customers to track their spending on the move.
Vectra Networks has introduced what they are calling the industry`s first real time detection platform for insider and targeted threats. Their X-series platform delivers a combination of dynamic community threat analysis and real time detection of cyber attacks. The firm says that their platform`s real time breach detection identifies and analyzes anomalous host connectivity, as well as reconnaissance, lateral movement and unusual data acquisition to thwart insider issues.
Juniper Research predicts that the top trends for securing data in 2015 will be through the use of encryption, tokenization, and biometric authentication. Juniper foresees more and more organizations investing in encryption and tokenization solutions next year, and biometrics are increasingly seen as a major measure for augmenting end-user identification and transactional authentication across various technologies.
vocaPASS is the first and only product to deliver voice biometric passwords as a free, IP-based service. vocaPASS secures a simple voice biometric from a consumer when they register with a website, app or network service. Voice biometrics are obtained from a Voice Authorization Statement that is secured directly through the browser. When the consumer returns to login, vocaPASS obtains another voice print from them. If the incoming voice print matches the registered biometric, vocaPASS allows the consumer to pass.

In an effort to support local merchants, some FIs are offering incentives such as checking promotions that enter the names of qualifying users into drawings for gift certificates to local stores. Some place various conditions on users in order to qualify for gift certificates, such as: using their debit cards at least 20 times per month; signing up for electronic statements; and performing at least one direct deposit or automatic debit transaction.
Celent has released a new report, titled, ‘Retail Banking Channel Systems in North America: The Quest for Omnichannel Continues.` In the report, they note that although digital engagement is where the industry may be headed, face-to-face engagement is where the industry remains. A third of surveyed FIs expect no change in branch count over the next five years, while 40% expect a net add in branches. Just 25% of FIs forecast a decline in branch count. A growing number of FIs are seeking ways to engage online consumers, but their capabilities are lagging. Less than one in five FIs offer shopping coupons, discounts, or rewards programs online; fewer offer text or video chat options; and fewer still offer online appointment booking.
Commerce Bank has introduced toggle which they claim is an industry first set of payment features that allows cardholders to manage both their everyday spending and larger purchases all on one card. The software gives users the ability to manage all of their purchases, that are typically distributed across multiple credit and debit cards, using only one credit card. Two checking accounts from any financial institution can be linked to their Commerce credit card to create a customized payment plan for purchases ranging from everyday spending like gas to major purchases like appliances. Cardholders can adjust their payment preferences at any time and the new preferences will be applied nightly.

NICE Systems launched its Real-Time Fraud Prevention solution, which they say enables contact centers to detect and prevent fraud in real time using voice biometrics and both speech and desktop analytics. Powered by the NICE Engage Platform, the software uses real time streaming and analytics to check every incoming call against a fraudster watch list and detect if the caller is a known fraudster. If a call is determined to be high risk, the agent is immediately informed and guided in real time to appropriately handle the interaction. The company claims that their solution identifies 90 percent of fraudulent callers in the first few seconds of a call.
