NCR has set up the first ATM in the United States to comply with the EMV standard at a New York City branch of the $30.4 billion-asset People's United Bank. NCR reports that it is upgrading the ATMs in partnership with Vantiv and ATM service provider Pendum, and the upgrade includes a refresh of both the software and the card-reader hardware.

According to the Federal Reserve, about $8.7 billion in $100 notes circulate worldwide, or about 26 percent of all U.S. currency in circulation. The introduction of a new $100 bill is still five months away and ATM manufacturers have been busy getting prepared. They have had to re-program and test the software that runs the note validators in their ATMs and currency counters to recognize the new $100 bill.

McAfee recently stated that they are seeing about 150,000 new pieces of malware every day. In response, the company has released two new complete endpoint security suites — one aimed at the enterprise and one aimed at businesses with 1,000 or fewer nodes. Both suites include Deep Defender and a host of other technologies, from endpoint firewall to intrusion prevention, application blocking and mobile device management. Deep Defender resides between the memory and OS to perform real-time memory and CPU monitoring. The company says that its real time, kernel level behavioral monitoring exposes and removes unknown threats, including kernel-mode rootkits, to preempt zero-day malware.

Some security experts are convinced that "security analytics" will be the next big thing in IT security. We will explain what they mean and how security analytics work in the July issue of Credit Union tech-talk - subscribe now.

As of March 31, the total number of Visa chip cards in the US market was 3.5 million and growing at the rate of 5,000 per day. Internet Access

The Frost & Sullivan 2012 IT Decision Maker’s View of the Enterprise Communications Evolution survey has noted that financial services organizations currently are the leading adopters of VoIP (voice over Internet protocol), SIP (session initiation protocol) trunking and enterprise-wide UC (unified communications) deployments. These are cost-effective communications technologies that cut costs by running voice and data traffic over a single IP backbone. SIP trunking in particular can save money in several ways:

- eliminate expensive ISDN PRIs

- give access to shared trunks across locations

- reduce the number of PSTN gateways across branch offices

- easy to add and remove SIP trunks

Historically, building a resilient, high-capacity WAN (wide area network) meant lacing together frame-relay and point-to-point leased line circuits. Now those technologies and their successors are being displaced by a variety of IP-based Ethernet circuits. We will cover the pros and cons of Ethernet-based WAN implementations in the July issue of Credit Union tech-talk - subscribe today.
