EMC released its first, purpose-built, all-solid state drive (SSD) array, as well as new software that identifies server flash throughout a data center and allows it to be managed under one interface. EMC's all-SSD XtremIO Array is based on a clustered architecture, allowing multiple SSD modules to be added, increasing performance and capacity linearly. Unlike EMC's current all-flash appliances, which are filled with PCIe cards, the new XtremIO Array uses serial ATA (SATA) SSDs, which come in a 2.5-in. hard-drive form factor. For data protection, XtremIO has a proprietary algorithm that is similar to RAID 6 (capable of protecting data with up to two flash card failures), but with the performance of RAID 1.
SPEC, the standards body for performance benchmarks, has released a new toolkit that should help customers choose the most energy-efficient server for the workloads they need to run. SPEC's Server Efficiency Rating Tool will be used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to provide efficiency data for an update to its Energy Star for Servers program that will roll out soon. The EPA already has an Energy Star program for servers, but the criteria it uses to rate systems is limited, including the efficiency of power supplies and how much power a server draws at idle. The SERT tool will provide much more detailed information.

Red Hawk is offering a two-way audio/video monitoring solution that the company calls "a cop in a box." They say that their service restores a sense of security to the cardholder and reinforces the security of the ATM itself. It is a monitored surveillance system that includes two way audio and two way video, plus a push to call for help police dispatch button.
Cardtronics has acquired i-design group plc, which is a firm that provides the technology and services that transform ATM screens and receipts into delivery devices for interactive consumer communications. The i-design solution repurposes the “waiting time” in a standard ATM transaction. On an i-design enhanced ATM, screen-saver loops and screens that formerly read “processing” or “please wait” can deliver targeted marketing/advertising messages, interactive on-screen consumer surveys, plus a call-to-action message on the receipt after the transaction.
Diebold announced the launch of the world's first "intelligent-powered" ATM, the Diebold 429. Built with a unique intelligent power management system, it automatically switches between three possible power sources (solar panel, alternating current (AC) grid and internal battery). Diebold claims that the machine consumes 40 percent less energy than the previous generation of cash dispensers available in the market. Security features include an EMV card reader, biometric technology and provision for dual security cameras. The ATM is specifically designed to meet the increasing demand for a robust self-service terminal in urban and rural areas of India.

Some credit unions are taking advantage of the improving economy to expand their loan portfolio beyond new and used cars into promoting motorcycle and RV loans. Case in point: motorcycle sales were up 2.6% last year, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. Plus there is even better news on the high ticket RV marketplace: shipments of towable RVs and motor homes were up 14.6% and 27.3% respectively year over year in 2012, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. With spring almost here, some credit union marketing departments are starting to make a big push towards motorcycle and RV loans.
Many analysts believe that credit unions must make an all out effort to offer robust tablet banking apps. In support of their beliefs, they cite research showing that nearly half of U.S. households are expected to own at least one tablet by the end of 2013. Additionally, Fiserv said its 2012 Consumer Trends Survey revealed that nearly half of tablet owners have already used tablets to access their financial institutions' banking services, and almost two-thirds of future tablet owners would like to do so. Some observers believe that credit unions should treat tablets as a separate channel that should supplement online and mobile banking, and be app-driven to leverage all of the channel's attributes. It is important to note that the tablet lends itself to visual presentations of data, such as charts and graphs, and the ability to navigate with taps and swipes.
According to a new report from Javelin Strategy & Research, nearly half of American consumers want to view all of their financial account balances in one place. Javelin estimates only 21 percent of American consumers - or more than 49 million adults - mix and match current PFM features from software like Quicken, online banking, and various websites. Consumers are interested in both comprehensive and mobile personal finance management (PFM) tools, and are particularly interested in viewing all their account balances in one place, with nearly half prioritizing this feature over all the other PFM services.

Hiper PBX is an IP PBX solutions provider that builds its solutions around the Asterisk PBX, a popular and full-featured open-source PBX solution. The company states that this allows them to offer its customers a lower price point without skimping on advanced unified communications features. The company’s CP-3000 IP PBX, for instance, supports up to 500 extensions, supports SIP, H.323 and IAX2 protocols; trunk support for SIP, H323 and IAX accounts; remote extensions support; call forward, transference and conference support; personalized dial plan, voicemail to e-mail functionality, personalized IVR, and cluster configuration support for high availability, among other features.
Qualys announced that Qualys BrowserCheck Business Edition, the company’s free cloud service, now gives organizations end-to-end automation for continuously monitoring which browsers, plugins, security settings and OS updates are present on users’ computers. IT administrators can now use the solution’s web console to install BrowserCheck on employees’ and contractors’ computers, set up periodic automatic scans that are undetected by the users, and view reports of the results. Using the service, Qualys says that credit unions can more effectively manage computer security and show compliance auditors that systems are being kept up-to-date.
Traditionally, the features and functions available from the hosted unified communications providers weren’t even close to what was available from the premise-based vendors. However over the past few years, this gap has closed significantly to the point that hosted UC solutions are on par with what one could get from a premise-based solution. In the April issue of Credit Union tech-talk, we will discuss some of top business reasons to consider a hosted collaboration solution - subscribe today.
Victrio is aimed at reducing instances of fraud in call centers. According to the company, the offering, which is available as a fully hosted service or an on-premise installation, is capable of silently screening calls, matching a caller's voiceprint and audio characteristics against a fraudster database. Identity Confidence is scored and reported to the agent or fraud management system. There's also a Customer Alert Review Tool, which integrates with existing fraud management tools and provides a Web-based console for keeping track of known fraudsters and their activities. It provides trend analysis and fraudster profiles as well.
