Network Box USA, the American division of leading global Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) Network Box, announced that its Unified Threat Management (UTM+) NBRS5.0 Solution has won the Gold Award in the Category of Unified & Integrated Security in the 8th Annual 2013 Hot Companies and Best Products Award dinner and presentation. Asheville, North Carolina-based Telco Community Credit Union (TCCU) has recently installed an ARCA CM18 teller cash recycler, helping to save time and better serve its members. The company notes that cash automation has been the basis of a long relationship between ARCA and TCCU.
NeighborBench, a provider of advanced compliance solutions for credit unions, announced WyHy Federal Credit Union, Northwest United Federal Credit Union, and Denver Community Credit Union recently joined its client community. There are basically two major players left in the magnetic hard disk industry: Western Digital and Seagate, which when combined control 90% of the market. But when it comes to SSDs (solid state drives), both companies have lagged behind smaller competitors. Seagate is playing catch up on the SSD front, but has come out with a new line of enterprise SSDs. The 600 Pro ships in six capacities: 100, 120, 200, 240, 400, and 480 GB. As for pricing, you can expect to pay about $1.20-1.60/GB.
ZyXEL Communications has unveiled a high-performance power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) switch and a Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch capable of handling applications like VoIP, video streaming, teleconferencing and video surveillance. The new Ethernet switch solutions deliver instant connectivity to Wi-Fi Access Points (APs), security cameras, VoIP phones and other devices that need flexible deployments with direct access to power sources in office environments. The ES1100-8HP-240W is available for $309, while the GS1100-8HP-240W is available for $319.

Dell has released Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition which manages and optimizes server virtualization as well as virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and their joint impact on such IT resources as storage. AirWatch Mobile Device Management (MDM) is software that is designed to streamline and automate management of mobile devices. The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) announced the availability of a new member service that provides compliance monitoring and regulatory alerts, for all 50 states and Washington, DC. ATMIA management and members with extensive experience in compliance and regulatory matters have compiled a list of items critical to ATM operators and owners. That list included requirements pertaining to ATM licensing, surcharge restrictions, security requirements, ADA, EBT/TANF restrictions, and others.
Credit unions looking to build a low cost kiosk based on the iPad may want to look at Spartadata's iPad Kiosk Pro with swiper enclosure. The company says the flexible, modular design is compatible with all iPad generations. The company also offers an SDK to harness the card reader functionality. One-third of those who use mobile banking name it as a reason why they stay with their financial institution, according to a study from Yodlee Interactive. Mobile banking services edged out every other banking channel in the study:
- 33% said they were most influenced by mobile
- 32% said online banking
- 32% said branch availability
- 30% cited number and location of ATMs
Overall, "convenience" ranked number one at 63% and "customer service" ranked second at 43%.
According to recent study by Accenture, 45% of the surveyed 4,002 smartphone users said security was their biggest reason for not using mobile payment systems. The second biggest concerns were privacy issues and the greater convenience of other types of payments, which were cited by 37% of respondents. In addition, the survey found that 60% of respondents who were already using mobile payments said they would use these systems more often if retailers offered them instant coupons to do so. More than 50% cited merchant rewards points as their incentive of choice for using mobile payments.
Jot is the mobile banking app that Chase provides to small business owners. The app was recently updated to permit users to tag their transactions at the point of sale. The new feature lets customers attach a photo of the receipt or of the item itself with the transaction. The receipts can also be downloaded to accounting software such as QuickBooks or Excel.
Some security experts recommend performing an audit of each application and find out the number of total elevated user (and service) accounts within the application with the goal of finding out how many elevated users are absolutely needed within the application. The next step is to get rid of those you don't need and improve control over the rest. Of course applications that utilize RBAC (role-based access control) have much better security because what each user can do is determined by their role which is usually just a few functions or tasks. In a well written RBAC program, almost no one is an admin, and even the admins are limited in what they can do.

Fortunately for smaller credit unions, there are a number of customer relationship management (CRM) solutions designed specifically for smaller organizations. Small business CRM software packages are designed to meet the needs of smaller organizations without being cumbersome, overwhelming or expensive to purchase or maintain. Here are four systems that include social integration:
- Zoho CRM
Alamo Federal Credit Union is rolling out a Mobile Concierge Service. The San Antonio-based credit union’s concierge service can help members fill out loan documents, configure bill pay or mobile banking, switch accounts from another financial institution or provide other personalized assistance. The service is available to not only members, but prospective members as well.
"Online Banking: Improving the Customer Experience," the latest report from Mercator Advisory Group, reveals that despite widespread usage of online banking, consumers often hesitate to use an FI's online channels (such as online chat) but continue to communicate via branch visits or call centers. And, while only 6% of surveyed consumers reported serious complaints about their FIs within the past year, three times that number posted complaints on social media websites instead of a FI-sponsored social media site. The report concludes that "financial institutions need to improve user experience with online banking by supporting more consistent user experiences among channels and new technologies that offer access to more knowledgeable specialists that can resolve problems online."
Personal Finance Management (PFM) tools are certainly improving, yet many consumers are hesitant to use them. The Federal Reserve said in a 2012 report that 21% of consumers currently use a PFM tool, while Aite Group projects the usage higher at 27%, and Javelin concurs with the Fed with their 21% number using a mix and match of PFM tools. Citrix announced new models in its CloudBridge line of branch repeater hardware, along with a software update to Version 7.0, which adds WAN optimization capability and direct support for public cloud services. Capacities range from 1 to 10Mbps for small branch devices up to 2Gbps for data center appliances.
ShoreTel has unveiled a new business-grade docking station that has the ability to transform iPhones and iPads into deskphones. Users can place and answer calls by picking up the handset and dialing a number on the dial pad or on the device’s screen; the ShoreTel Dock automatically launches the ShoreTel Mobility application. The dock can be combined with ShoreTel conferencing applications to enjoy capabilities such as call recording, instant messaging (IM), presence and conferencing.
